Stonex 2-5mm

Quality aggregates combined with tried and tested resins

Stonex 2-5mm is our most popular product. It consists of a blend of aggregates, 2-5mm, along with a sand to maximise safety. We have a great range of colours and finishes and would be more than happy to discuss the most popular combination to ensure you have the perfect finish.

Overview

Stonex is made up of an aggregate, quartz or stone, coloured or natural, combined with a strong polyurethane resin to ensure you get a surface that lasts.

Sand is added to the mix to increase the strength of the matrix. There are also other additives that can be used to increase the slip resistance of the final surface.

Our range of Stonex blends is constantly growing, so please contact the office to discuss your needs or just get some samples.

Characteristics and benefits; Hard, easy to maintain, decorative, porous, seamless, slip resistant,

Aggregates

Museum Square Bristol 2aThere are many different types of natural and coloured aggregates on the market. Each aggregate has its own unique properties, such as hardness, skid resistance, abrasion value etc.

Flexflooring have installed thousands of square metres of various different aggregates, we can advise you on the best aggregate for the job and offer you a number of different natural or coloured options.

Flexflooring Ltd is an independent installer and not tied to any one manufacturer or supplier of these systems.

Binder Resins

Aliphatic binder                   Aromatic binder

Flexflooring use a selection of polyurethane binders sourced from around Europe.

As with rubber there are two classes of polyurethane stone binders

Aliphatic binders, are a non yellowing, UV stable binder which dramatically reduces colour fade. It is a class of isocyanate used in the manufacture of light stable coatings, more expensive than…

Aromatic binders, commonly used in the construction of playgrounds, but will cause colours to fade in UV light, as it is a class of isocyanate which is sensitive to Oxidisation and prone to degradation in direct sunlight.

Aromatic binders used with a golden or yellow aggregate mask the yellowing effect.

Substrata

The ideal sub base for a driveway is a porous asphalt. The standard recommendation is for a 14mm DBM (Dense base macadam) which itself is installed on a compacted stone sub base. This will ensure that the driveway is SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage System) compliant. See our video. That is rain water will drain through each surface layer a new builds should be constructed this way.

Drainage

As mentioned above, the text book construction would be SUDS compliant. However, often we are asked to install over non porous sub bases, such as concrete. Ideally the concrete, or non porous base will have a fall that will allow the water to escape. Remember, Stonex 2-5mm is a porous product, and as such you cannot construct any falls with this product, or any resin bound product.

Non slip

There are many different types of stone, each with different properties, such as non slip. However the non slip properties can be enhanced by adding a clear polymer to the mix. This gives a grit like feel to the surface, although it cant be seen. It does have the effect of matting down the surface.

Possible day joins

Ideally the whole surface can be laid in one hit, but this does of course depend on how large the area is. If it is not possible to install all in one day, then you must expect a day work join, this is something

Depth of stone

For a driveway, which will have vehicles running over it, and with a 2-5mm stone size, we would recommend a depth of approximately 15mm. If there are areas on the dive where the sheer forces are greater, such as in turning circles, then it may be wise to install a little deeper.

Resin

See resins on the info page. There are two types, one is UV resistant (more expensive) and one is not UV resistant. The Non UV resin will cause a yellowing affect in sun light. This necessarily isnt a problem if you choose a yellow / golden stone. But it must be borne in mind that if, say, you put down a plant pot for a while and then moved it, you would see where the pot had been.

Stone choice and the matrix

There are various steps you can take to increase the strength of the drive. The matrix is important, and we would always recommend using a 2-5mm stone mixed with a 1-3mm or 2-3mm stone, this allows for more surface area and a stronger bond. We would also recommend adding sand to the mix, as this too will increase the strength.

Finishing edges

At some point the resin bound surface needs to terminate. This can be done easily by finishing against something like a wall, or you can install some aluminium or stainless steel edging as illustrated in the picture

The garden was excavated and replaced with a porous asphalt surface. Other issues to consider were the step to the house, man hole covers in the concrete drive and edging along the boundary to Continue reading
