Pool Changing Areas and Shower Floors

Stonex Sand

This distinct, smooth surface is made up of very fine quartz, the colour choices are vast and is treated with a non slip additive. It is seamless and hence easier to clean, no grout joins/ It has proved to be very popular with schools and holiday parks.

A stonex sand floor is comprised of millions grains of coloured sand that was processed for millions of years on river beds by erosion. This grains are coloured and sieved to produce a high quality, very fine aggregate.

The grains are then combined with an epoxy binding agent, trowelled into place before being pore filled with another epoxy and finally sealed with a polyurethane sealing coat.

The result is a very hard, wear resistant, seamless floor with infinite colour choices available.

Characteristic and benefits; hard wearing, colourful, non porous, chemical resistant, non slip (with additive)

Typical uses; Swimming pool surroundschanging roomscommercial kitchens, nightclub floors,

Quartz Sand

Flexflooring source high quality quartz and can colour match or come up with unique coloured blends that will be bespoke to the individual or you can opt for some of our popular blends.

epoxyThe small granules of sand are combined with a low viscosity, colourless epoxy binder, mixed together before being trowelled into place. Epoxies are known to be very hard and resistant to various chemical and mechanical loadings.

Pore filling and sealing

Pore Fill

Once the Stonex sand floor has been laid and sufficiently cured (normally around 24 hours), the surface has to be pore filled with another epoxy substance, know as a thixotropic epoxy. This epoxy is forced into the surface filling all the microscopic pores that exist, making it a non porous surface. Normally two coats are applied to fill all the pores.

Once this has all cured, a final matt seal coat is normally applied. At this stage, an additive can be made to improve the non slip qualities of the surface, especially important in wet environments such as changing rooms.

Stonex Sand has proved a very popular product for these areas. Hygiene is obviously of paramount importance. Porous products, such as rubbaflex fg or sg will hold dirty water and allow bacteria to grow. Stonex sand is a non porous product so water cannot sit in the surface. Also, unlike tiles or traditional vinyl surfaces, there are no grout or welded joins, so dirt cannot lodge in the surface.

Non slip, properties of the surface can be enhanced by adding a polymer to the mix. The more that is added the more non slip the surface will become. However the more non slip it becomes, then more difficult it can become to clean, so you need to find a good medium.

Hand laid, this surface is hand laid by experienced tradesmen, but because of this, you may get the occasional trowel mark. A skilled installer will use 1000w lights to try and eradicate such trowel marks, but the surface will look different under different lighting conditions.

Damp free, epoxy has a nasty habit of turning a milky white colour when it comes into contact with water, before it has cured, so it is of vital importance that the area being installed is very dry and there is no chance of water dripping from the ceiling or pipes etc while the surface is curing.

Larkfield Leisure Centre Changing Room Flooring

The Challenge Tonbridge and Malling council, in conjunction with tmactive, wanted an overhaul of their changing and shower area floors. The existing tiled floor complete with drainage gullies, was a maintenance head ache, all those grout lines and was in need of modernisation. As always time was of the essence, the only available window was the two weeks Continue reading
