Project Background
Unsurprisingly August is a busy time for school pool surround installations and with high demand for pool surrounds over this period, one really stands out. Our recently completed project for the Royal Russell School in Croydon.
The Project
The school chose to upgrade their indoor pool with Stonex Quartz Screed in the popular Slate colour blend supplied by SIDEC.
The project covered an impressive 300m² of pool surround, with 74 linear metres of coving, and had a strict non-negotiable handover date before the start of the new school term.
Prep Work and Process
Surface Preparation:
Our preparation work involved uplifting existing tiles where necessary and diamond grinding any remaining bonded tiles to create a smooth, stable base.
Drainage Installation:
Proper drainage was a key focus for this project. We installed 104m of 100mm internal drainage channel, along with new skimmers and deck boxes to ensure effective water management around the pool area.
Subbase Consolidation:
To further strengthen the subbase, we applied an epoxy damp-proof membrane (DPM) and mesh system. This step was essential to create a stable, moisture-resistant foundation for the Stonex Quartz Screed installation.
Stonex Quartz Screed Installation:
The installation of the Stonex Quartz Screed itself was completed in just 2 days, thanks to the expertise of our team.
Non-Porous Surface Creation:
We allowed a further 2 days to apply 2 coats of epoxy thixotropic porefiller, ensuring the surface was completely non-porous. We then applied a final PU matt seal coat for added durability and protection.
Contingency Planning:
We allocated 1 day of contingency time to address any unforeseen challenges, ensuring the project remained on track for the critical handover date.
The Result
After 10 days of dedicated work, we handed over a safe, durable, and visually appealing pool surround just in time for the first day of term.
