Resin Bound Stone

Our Resin Bound Stone system is a SuDS compliant seamless surfacing solution that combines natural decorative stone aggregates with a high-performance, UV-stable polyurethane resin. The result is a hard-wearing, visually striking finish suitable for driveways, patios, walkways and other external areas for both domestic homes and commercial use.

For this system, we work exclusively with Vuba, the UK’s leading manufacturer of high-performance resin-bound systems. Their products are tested for strength, flexibility and permeability, giving every FLEX installation a premium finish built to last.

How it’s installed

Resin Bound stone is a permeable surface. Our recommended installation process follows Vuba’s best-practice system, ensuring strength, longevity and compliance with SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems).

Sub-base preparation: We begin with a compacted MOT Type 3 sub-base, ensuring the correct levels and drainage. We can also install onto existing surface (such as concrete, or asphalt) if repaired where needed and suitable.
Base layer: We recommend a VubaMac structural base build-up is applied. This specialised layer enhances strength, reduces reflective cracking and increases the lifespan of the surface. VubaMac comes with Vuba’s 5 year no-crack guarantee.
Reinforcement: Vuba SRM (Structural Reinforcement Mesh) is an integral part of the system which should be integrated to further strengthen the surface and minimise movement.
Resin-bound topping: We mix Vuba’s natural decorative aggregates with Vuba’s UV-stable polyurethane resin on site and trowel by hand and power trowel to the recommended specified depth for a seamless finish. Other additives can be added to the mix to increase the slip resistance of the finished surface.
Curing & finish – The surface is left to cure and is ready for light foot traffic after 12-24 hours and vehicle traffic after 24 hours.
Use & maintenance: Once cured, the surface the surface is permeable, so water drains through, rather than sitting on top. Maintenance is simple: regular sweeping or pressure-washing and immediate treatment of oil or spills keeps it looking its best.

What to consider (and why working with experts matters)

Correct base & preparation. Even the best surface can fail if the substrate is poorly prepared.
Depth & traffic-load matching. For driveways, turning circles or heavier use you’ll want the specification to be appropriate (e.g., thicker resin bound stone topping depth) so the system performs. We refer to Vuba’s resin bound application guidelines: Vuba Resin Products UK | Vubamac. As an example, for pathways, we install the topping at 15-18mm depth depending on requirements.
Professional installation. Given the mix, compaction and curing nuances (especially in outdoor UK climate), it’s strongly recommended to work with certified or experienced installers. FLEX are one of Vuba’s Elite Approved Installers.
Avoid dragging heavy loads. While strong, the surface may be damaged by sharp impacts, heavy static loads or improper use (e.g., static turning on wheels) if not properly specified.
