Rubber Mulch

Our Rubber Mulch system is a porous, cost-effective surfacing solution created using blended colour-coated SBR tyre granules and shred, combined with a flexible, moisture-curing polyurethane binder. Hand trowelled by our experienced installation team, it provides a durable and visually appealing finish for outdoor areas.

Made using recycled materials, Rubber Mulch is designed to create safe, natural-looking environments and is suitable for both domestic and commercial applications. Common uses include playgrounds, recreation areas, pathways and other landscaped spaces.

How it’s installed

Our recommended approach is to install Rubber Mulch at a depth of approximately 40mm onto an MOT Type 3 sub-base.

The Rubber Mulch is combined with a polyurethane binder before being hand trowelled by our experienced installation team to create the finished surface.

For areas containing climbing or play equipment, a greater depth of Rubber Mulch may be required depending on the free fall height of the equipment.

What to consider

Colour changes over time: Rubber Mulch uses an aromatic polyurethane binder as a cost-effective option. This binder is not UV stable, so some colour fading may occur with prolonged UV exposure. The darker colour options help make this less noticeable.
Correct surface depth: Our standard recommended installation is approximately 40mm, but areas beneath climbing and play equipment may require a greater depth depending on the free fall height.
Correct base preparation: Rubber Mulch is normally installed onto an MOT Type 3 sub-base, so the condition and preparation of the base should be considered when planning the installation.
Professional installation: The product is hand trowelled to achieve a consistent, durable finish and should be installed to the appropriate specification for the intended use.

Working for Leighton Linslade Town Council, FLEX installed Rubber Mulch at one of four recreation and park locations.

The Mahogany Red surface was installed at an average depth of 40mm, with additional depth beneath the play equipment. Finished up to the grass edge, it created a durable, natural-looking and cost-effective play surface.
