Can an Old Pool Surround Be Resurfaced Without Removing the Whole Existing Surface?

If your pool surround is looking dated or becoming uneven, replacing the entire area may seem like the obvious next step. But it is not always necessary.

Some existing pool surrounds can be retained and prepared for a new surface. Others need more substantial work. At FLEX we assess the existing base first and recommend the refurbishment approach that suits its condition.

If problems have become more noticeable over the summer, the quieter months can be a useful time to start planning for next season.

Can an Existing Pool Surround Be Resurfaced?

Yes, in some cases. The existing surface needs to be stable and suitable for the system being installed.

Sound areas may be able to stay in place. The same principle applies to other surface systems, although the base still needs to meet the requirements of the proposed system.

We completed a 180m² domestic pool surround where the existing crazy paving was in good enough condition to retain. Our installers repaired weaker areas before preparing the remaining slabs for a new RubbaFlex®fg surface.

The customer was able to update the pool area without complete demolition of the existing surround.

What Happens if Only Part of the Existing Surface Is Unsuitable?

A pool surround does not necessarily have the same condition across the whole area.

On the 180m² project, weaker sections were broken out and rebuilt using resin bound stone with structural reinforcement mesh. The retained paving was diamond ground and prepared before the new rubber surface was installed.

That resin bound stone formed part of the remedial work beneath the finished surround. We assess individual areas rather than assume the whole surface needs the same treatment.

You do not need to decide which areas can stay. We assess the base and include the required preparation within the proposed refurbishment.

When Does an Old Pool Surround Need to Be Removed?

Sometimes retaining the existing surface is not the right approach.

We have also refurbished a domestic pool surround where old patio slabs had become uneven. The slabs were removed and the area was screeded to create a suitable base for the new rubber surface.

The two projects had different starting conditions, so they needed different preparation. Our recommendation depends on what we find at your property.

Can Resin Bound Flooring Be Used Around a Pool?

Yes. Resin bound flooring is another system we install for domestic pool surrounds. Our resin bound stone combines natural decorative aggregate with a UV-stable polyurethane resin and is hand trowelled over a suitable base.

We recently installed 126m² of resin bound stone for a domestic garden that included a pool surround, pathways, raised seating, floating steps and an outdoor shower. The resin bound flooring created one continuous surface across the different areas.

Because resin bound stone is permeable, it can suit external poolside areas where the proposed build-up is designed for drainage through the surface. Resin bound flooring also provides a natural aggregate finish rather than the fine rubber appearance of RubbaFlex®fg.

The right choice depends on the property, existing base and finish you prefer. We would not recommend a system simply because it can be used around pools. We assess the area first and explain the suitable options.

What Can Replace Dated Paving Around a Pool?

RubbaFlex®fg is another option we install for domestic pool surrounds.

It is a fine-grade wet-pour rubber surface designed for uses that include swimming pool surrounds. Our installation team hand trowels the material to create a seamless finish, with a range of colours and blends available.

RubbaFlex®fg provides a slip-resistant, porous surface for poolside environments. Its fine-grade material also creates a smoother finish than standard-grade wet-pour rubber.

If you prefer a natural stone appearance, resin bound flooring may be more appropriate. Our resin bound stone is also installed as a seamless external surface and is available in different aggregate blends.

Can Resurfacing Change the Appearance of an Older Pool Area?

Yes. Replacing or covering an ageing pool surround can make a significant visual difference without changing the pool itself.

The 180m² RubbaFlex®fg project used a Catalonia colour blend over the previous crazy paving. On another domestic refurbishment, the owners selected an Arctic colour blend after the old patio slabs were removed.

A resin bound flooring project creates a different look because the finish comes from natural decorative aggregate. The choice between RubbaFlex®fg and resin bound stone therefore affects the appearance as well as the preparation and build-up.

Our role is to work out what can be retained, what preparation is required and which finish suits the surrounding property.

Do You Need to Know What Is Under the Existing Pool Surround?

No. You do not need to diagnose the existing base or work out the preparation before contacting us.

If the pool surround needs updating, that is enough to start the conversation. This applies if you are considering RubbaFlex®fg, resin bound flooring or have not chosen a system.

We can inspect the existing surface and identify remedial work. If resin bound stone is being considered, we can assess the base and proposed build-up. If removal is the better route, we can account for that in the proposed works.

When Should You Start Planning a Pool Surround Refurbishment?

You can start planning as soon as the existing surround is no longer giving you the finish or condition you want.

For outdoor pools, starting the conversation after the main summer-use period can give you time to consider the refurbishment before the following season. The installation approach still depends on the property and proposed system, so we would confirm the practical programme for your project rather than assume a standard timescale.

If you are considering pool surround resurfacing, reach out to us for advice or a site visit. Our installers can assess the existing surface and recommend an appropriate route, including RubbaFlex®fg or resin bound flooring where either system suits the property.
