Prepare the sub-base
The key to any surface application is the preparation of the sub base. For external surfaces, the resin bound stone is ideally installed directly onto porous asphalt. However other sub bases are suitable as long as they are prepared correctly, the most important property being that the resin bound product is laid onto a solid structural sub-base.
Mix the aggregate and pour
The aggregate is mixed with the resin at the manufacturers recommended ratio until the aggregate is fully coated. This is then poured onto the surface and trowelled into place by skilled tradesmen. It must be remembered that resin bound stone is a porous product, so it cannot be used to create falls etc.
Environmental factors are important when installing resin flooring. Too much moisture in the air, or damp external surfaces can be detrimental to the finished product. If moisture gets into the resin, then it can react and can cause blows (small lumps) in the surface. The most common problem with these installations are the use of inferior resins, which is down to the installers choice.
The amount of time for the surface to cure (go hard) is down to temperature, the hotter the temperature, the quicker it will cure, so normally, resins will have different curing profiles, depending upon on whether they are used during the winter or summer months.
